2012 Tournament Schedule Set

2012 will mark the 27th season for the Kentucky Senior Golf Association (KSGA), and membership registration is now underway. Membership starts at $40, and includes a bag tag, cap, and playing privileges in 2012 KSGA tournaments. Kelly Newland, Jr., PGA Will Join the Team Starting December 1

Kentucky's family of golf organizations are pleased to introduce Mr. Kelly Newland, Jr., PGA as the KGA-PGA, Inc.'s new Director, Junior & Senior Golf.  Kelly is a native of Grayson, Kentucky and a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he was a member of the inaugural class from the EKU Professional Golf Management Program. 2011 KSGA Player of the Year

Rick Cain Takes Overall Honors

The Kentucky Senior Golf Association is proud to announce that Rick Cain has been named the 2011 KSGA Player of the Year. The award is given to the individual amassing the most points based on performance in various state and national events.

 

Cain secured the top spot by collecting points at several events in 2011 season including 1st Place at the KSGA Spring Special and was champion of the Senior Match Play tournament. He also finished in the top ten at the Senior Amateur Championship, the Prudential Kentucky Senior Open and the KSGA Fall Special.

The Kentucky Senior Golf Association wrapped up its 2011 tournament season with the Fall Special at Hurstbourne Country Club on Saturday, September 26. Despite wet course conditions the 95 player field competed in 5 different handicap flights and a super senior flight.

Prudential Kentucky Senior Open Championship

Jeff Howerton Goes Wire-to-Wire to Win

The final round of the 2011 Prudential Kentucky Senior Open wrapped up on Wednesday, September 7 at Frankfort Country Club. Jeff Howerton of Madisonville, KY went wire-to-wire to take the title as the overall champion. He had scores of 70-73 for a 143 tournament total and defeated Tom Scheuerman in a one hole playoff.

KGA Mid-Amateur Championship

Final Results

The final round of the 2011 KGA Mid-Amateur Championship wrapped up on Tuesday, August 30 at Owensboro Country Club. Joshua Rhodes of Paducah, KY took the title as the overall champion with a two day tournament total of 70-66 (136). Scott Ray of Central City was the overall net winner with a 133 total.

 

The 56 player field competed in a Mid-Amateur Flight as well as a Super Mid-Amateur Flight. The overall gross winner of the Super Mid-Amateur Flight was David Houk and the overall net winner of the Super Mid-Amateur Flight was Wayne Ashlock with a 135 two day net total.

Two Legends Elected to Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame

Brown Cullen, Jr. and Ted Schulz to Receive Honors

The Kentucky Golf Association and the Kentucky PGA Section are pleased to announce that Brown Cullen, Jr. and Ted Schulz have been elected to the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame. KSGA Senior Amateur Championship

Don Wood Wins 2011 Senior Amateur

The final round of the 2011 KSGA Senior Amateur Championship wrapped up on Tuesday, August 23 at Big Spring Country Club. The Senior Amateur was broken down into age flights as well as a Championship Flight. The winner of the Championship Flight and Overall Champion of the tournament was Don Wood of Louisville, KY (Left in the picture) who had rounds of 75-72 for a 147 with Laurence Woods of Louisville, KY (Right in the picture) finishing as the Runner-Up with scores of 75-74 for a 149.

U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier Results

Greenbrier Golf & Country Club

The U.S. Senior Amateur Qualifier at Greenbrier Golf & Country Club in Lexington, KY wrapped up on Wednesday, August 10. Dennis Long and Dan Smith both came away from the tournament earning exemptions into the  U.S. Senior Amateur Championship, September 10-15 at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot, VA.

 

Dan Smith defeated Joe Cantrell on the third hole of a sudden death playoff to earn his Qualifier spot. Thomas Baird defeated Bruce Walters on the first hole of a sudden death playoff for the second alternate spot.

The Kentucky Open title is one that has been held by some of the greatest golfers in history and the way the 2011 champion played today and during the past season, Brandon Brown may be added to that same list. Brown's final total of 203, 13 under par, included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Russ Cochran Wins Senior British Open

Paducah's Russ Cochran captured the Senior British Open on July 24 after firing a final round 67 to win by two strokes over Mark Calcavecchia.  Cochran, a KPGA and Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame member, enjoyed a successful PGA Tour career before joining the Champions Tour in 2009.  The win marked his third victory as a member of the Champions Tour.  Kentucky's family of golf organizations congratulate Russ on this great victory.  For more information, click HERE.

Golf has $710 Million Annual Impact on Kentucky's Economy

KGA & KPGA Conduct Kentucky Golf Economy Study

The World Golf Foundation, with support from the Kentucky Golf Association and Kentucky PGA Section, recently completed a study of the impact of golf on Kentucky's economy. The study, officially titled The Kentucky Golf Economy, noted that golf brings visitors to the state, drives residential development, generates retail sales, and creates demand for a myriad of goods and services. 2011 KSGA Match Play Championship

Final Results

The KSGA Match Play Championship at Oldham County Country Club concluded on Thursday, June 16. The 66 player field was divided up among 5 flights including the Championship Flight which was deteremined by the low 15 scores from the Monday Qualifying Round and last year's Champion, Mike Campbell. The Championship Flight and Flight #1 competed at 6,236 yards while the remaining flights played the course at 6,037. The results from all flights are listed below.

The 2011 KSGA Two-Man Team Championship was completed on Tuesday, May 17. 62 teams competed on Eagle's Nest Country Club and General Burnside Island State Park Golf Course between Monday, May 16 and Tuesday, May 17. Donald Ross Course Stern Test for Hopefuls

A field of 78 amateurs and professionals will test their skills and talents on the famed Donald Ross Course at Idle Hour Country Club in Lexington as they try to capture one of the five local qualifying spots for the 111th U.S. Open Championship. Qualifying rounds begin at 9:00 a.m. EDT on Monday, May 16th. Those five will then advance to sectional qualifiers across the country.

Kentucky Golf Association Extends Contract with USGA's Golf Handicap and Information Network

The Kentucky Golf Association is pleased to announce the extension of an agreement with the Golf Handicap and Information Network (GHIN) to provide handicapping services for members of the Kentucky Golf Association (KGA) through 2013. The KGA has utilized the GHIN Service since 1988, and currently provides handicapping services for approximately 27,000 individuals at over 195 member clubs across Kentucky.


The KGA, formed in 1911, is Kentucky’s governing body for amateur golf, and enjoys a very close working relationship with the Kentucky Section PGA in providing services to amateur golfers in Kentucky.

2011 KPGA Tee Pass Now Available

The KPGA is proud to announce that sales of the 2011 KPGA Tee Pass are underway. The KPGA Tee Pass is a booklet listing 115 golf facilities offering discounted golf, and many of Kentucky’s top public facilities are included, with each facility offering reduced rates to KPGA Tee Pass customers.

KGA-PGA, Inc. Names New Director, Junior & Senior Golf

Kentucky's family of golf organizations are happy to introduce Ryan Tahara as Director, Junior & Senior Golf.  A native of Elkhart, Indiana and graduate of Indiana University, Ryan comes to the KGA-PGA, Inc. from the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), where he has been serving as a Tournament Director.


Ryan is Rules of Golf certified by the USGA/PGA through his performance on the Rules of Golf Exam, and is well trained in tournament operations through his experience with the AJGA, which sets the standard for competitive junior golf in the United States.  

 

He will officially begin service on November 15.

Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame Ceremony Conducted

Three Individuals Inducted

Wildwood Country Club in Louisville served as the host for the 2011 Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame Ceremony on November 11.

 

The Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame was established in 1984 as a joint effort by the Kentucky Golf Association and the Kentucky Section PGA to honor individuals in Kentucky with significant achievements and accomplishments in various areas of golf. The Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame’s membership includes individuals with outstanding records as players, golf professionals, golf course superintendents, educators, and golf administrators. It is located at Golf House Kentucky and is administered by the Kentucky Golf Foundation.

Campbell Wins 2010 KSGA Player of the Year

Edges Cantrell as Season Closes

Mike Campbell had to wait a few extra days after the final event of the 2010 season to find out if he was the KSGA Player of the Year. His closest competitor, Joe Cantrell, had an outside chance to make the field at the US Senior Amateur Championship. The Cardinal Club in Simpsonville is fast becoming a popular host site for championship golf events and it is also becoming known as a place that doesn't surrender many low scores. Ted Schulz Captures Champions Tour's First Tee Open

Kentucky's family of golf organizations congratulate Louisville's Ted Schulz, who captured the Champions Tour's First Tee Open on September 5 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.  This marked Schulz's first victory on the Champions Tour. 


Schulz, the 1983 Kentucky State Amateur Champion and Kentucky Open Champion in 1984 and 1988, had a successful PGA Tour career, highlighted by wins at the 1989 Southern Open and the 1991 Nissan Los Angeles Open.

2010 KSGA Senior Amateur Championship Conducted at Audubon Country Club

Consistency was the name of the game for Ft. Mitchell's Roger Schoeni. His rounds of 75 and 74 earned him first place honors at the 2010 KSGA Senior Amateur Championship. Many players battled back in the second round after Audubon Country Club gave them all they wanted on Monday. Full Article

2010 KSGA Amazon.com Special

In typical fashion, Campbellsville Country Club opened up their gracious arms once again as they played host to the 2010 Kentucky Senior Golf Association's Amazon.com Special. The golf course conditions were great for the 86 KSGA members who competed in the event, as was evident when the scorecards were tallied. Six players recorded par or better scores, all from the first flight.

KSGA Summer Special

Danville Country Club played host to 106 members of the Kentucky Senior Golf Association for the 2010 Summer Special on July 19th. The golf course set up well for the players but only one played broke par and posted a red score - Dennis Long fired a one under par 71. Willis Black shot a 73 to take top honors in the Super Senior Division.

Kentucky Senior Golf Association's Fred Allen Fund Assists Kentucky's Junior Golfers

The Kentucky Senior Golf Association, through its Fred Allen Fund, will once again provide financial assistance to junior golfers from Kentucky who qualify for the United States Girls' Junior Championship and the United States Junior Amateur Championship. Each participant is eligible for up to $1,000 in assistance to cover expenses associated in traveling to and participating in the event. The 2010 United States Girls' Junior Championship is July 19-24 at The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst, North Carolina; and the United States Junior Amateur Championship will be conducted July 19-24 at Egypt Valley Country Club in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

2010 KSGA Match Play Championship

Only final matches in each flight remained when dawn broke this morning. Eight players were poised to become the Champion of their respective flight with the final day ahead of them. Bardstown Country Club's Maywood course provided a great challenge for participants all week and the Kentucky Senior Golf Association would like express a special "Thank You" to the club for hosting the event.
